Let it Go

Authors

"Let go or be dragged."

— Zen Proverb

Ever heard that quote? It's a way to say, if you hold onto old stuff too tightly, it can keep you stuck. It's especially true for people trying to become better leaders.

Sometimes, leaders can't let go of their old jobs or ways of doing things. They keep looking back, checking in on things they used to do, even when they have a whole new set of responsibilities. This is like driving a car but always looking in the rearview mirror. What happens? You're going to crash or get stuck.

So, think about your own job. Are there things you're still hanging onto that you don't need anymore? Are there tasks you should be giving to other people? Letting go of the idea that you have to be involved in every little thing is something that requires practice and reflection. Are you still dipping your toes into projects that your team can handle on their own? If so, you're not doing anyone any favors.

The real sign that you're ready for something bigger is when you can step back and see that things go well even when you're not watching like a hawk. That means you've built something that can last, even when you move on.

Before you aim for that next big goal, take a moment to think. What are you still clinging to that you should let go? The old saying "Let go or be dragged" gives us a choice. You can let go and move up, or hang on and stay stuck.

So what's it going to be? Time to let go and rise higher.
