About

From leading teams to studying the systems that are joining them.

I'm Jason Ehmke. I've spent my career building software, and a good part of it leading the teams that build it.

For a while this site was where I wrote about leadership. In 2023 I wrote The Daily Leader, a short essay most days on accountability, trust, delegation and communication. Later came a few pieces about being a father. Writing that often taught me that I don't know what I think until I've tried to write it down.

I'm now using the same habit on AI. Models went from novelty to coworker quickly, and I'd like to understand them properly. Right now that means evaluation: building a small test of whether a model can tell when not to act, and whether it knows when it doesn't know.

How the notebook works

Essays are for ideas I'm prepared to defend. Notes are for things I'm still working out. Paper reviews summarise a source and say where I disagree with it. Experiments come with their method and data.

When I make a claim specific enough to be wrong, I put a probability on it and add it to the claims page. I revise those numbers as I learn more, with a dated note each time. Old estimates stay visible, including the bad ones.
